The Sacred and the Profane

Just a couple of streets over from Alan, Norie, and Emma's home on the Rue Pigalle is the Musee Gustav Moreau. It's an amazing place, full to the eaves with the colossal, unfinished paintings of this proto-symbolist. Here I am, midway up the massive spiral staircase that connects Moreau's three cavernous salons.



A few Buddhas




Right now the Pompidou Centre is showcasing the large pornographic drawings (and life-sized statuettes) by Pierre Klossowski that he prepared to accompany his novels, "Roberte Ce Soir" and "The Revocation of the Edict of Nantes." I was amused because I know this material surprisingly well, having recently bought a translation of the novels illustrated with some of the same pieces. What I hadn't been aware of was that K. was brother to the painter Balthus. A few minutes later I encountered Balthus' famous painting "Alice," and snapped a voyeur's-eye view of one jeune fille confronting an edgy depiction of another:
